Features and Practices of High Performance Die Casting Alloy AlSi9MnMoZr

AlSi9MnMoZr is one type of high performance alloy made by RHEIN-FELDEN.The general performance is as following chart

There will be air trapped inside castings made by normal die casting alloy,the trapped air will cause blister on the surface of casting in T6 or T7 heat treatment processing.Therefore,the problem of trapped air need to be solved if castings need heat treatment. Normal die casting alloy can not meet such requirement so the high cost vacuum die casting is necessary for it.AlSi9MnMoZr can keep high alongation during casting and has advantage over aluminum alloy which get same alongation by T6 or T7 heat treatment.Weiheng die casting is good for any kinds of aluminum die casting.

AlSi9MnMoZr has following features:
  • Good castability,It has same castability as AlSi9 and AlSi10Mg and can be used for casting with wall thickness less than 1.5mm.
  • In high temperature working condition,it still keep good strength and tight size tolerance.

Practices of Die Casting

Melt:Fe proportion has to control within 0.15%,otherwise strength and alongation will be decreased badly.During manufacturing,there will be many factors which can cause Fe proportion increased.Melt machine which already used for alloy contained 0.6%-1.2% Fe need to be avoided and don’t clean melt machine with any kind of iron tools.

Sr is key role keep good alongation.Sr will be destroyed during melt and warming.Therefore AlSr10 stick need to added when Sr proportion less than 0.006%.

The temperature need to increase to 670℃ quickly in order to reduce oxidation.Oxidation affect machining properties badly.Also,the temperature can not more than 780℃.High temperature lead to destroy of Sr and Oxidation.

Melted alloy need to keep temperature within 680-720℃ in side chamber of die casting machine.For example,the alongation can only reach 2% at 660℃ and casting surface has obvious cold shut.

To keep melted alloy at temperature within 680-720℃,the following method has to be considered.

  • Chamber with oil warming system
  • Ceramic Ladle
  • Make warming equipment at temperature within 750℃-760℃.

Yield strength lower than standard if magnesium proportion less than 0.06%.Add magnesium bar during melting in order to enhance yield strength.

All in all,the above method can keep casting in high performance and properties with AlSi9MnMoZr.
