Thermal Problem of Die Casting

Thermals Cause a lot of problems in die casting

Most of most, thermal design of die is somewhere 90% of problem that will be seen. Its problem which from tiny defect of castings to big problem which cause tooling failure. There are several thermal problem as following
thermal simulation
thermal simulation
  • Shrinkage porosity in thick section

Can not stop shrinkage porosity but in most case it can be avoid. If castings have thick section,we can review thickness by using CAD or some simulation package and you can see there are thick section which need to be cooled. We need to put proper cooling in and shrinkage porosity should be avoided.Castings section freeze before the surrounds and there will be no shrinkage porosity.Shrinkage porosity can be found in aluminum, zinc, magnesium, brass die casting.

  • Cold flow in thin area

There are some scenario that we need minimum wall thickness of castings due to usage of final parts. However, different wall thickness have different influence on final castings.Thin wall thickness can result in cold flow and deformation. Therefore,we need to pre-heat tooling before mass production because temperature of die is very important for thin wall casting.

  • Crack and sink in hot areas

Cracking is mostly thermal problem. If one section is cooling faster than another one,it will shrink and put stress to another area if they are hot. Then another area will crack.Sink in hot area just shrinkage near surface.Sometimes in one die,you can get cracking in one area and sink in the other. Therefore,Eject after three seconds cooling in die or get hot cracking.Eject in four seconds or get sink.So it wont happen if you concern about thermal design at beginning.
